Choosing an IT consultant is a bit like choosing an accountant. You’re trusting someone with the systems your business runs on, so it pays to ask the right questions first.
1. Are You Independent?
Many “consultants” in Malta are also resellers. That isn’t automatically bad, but you should know whether a recommendation comes with a commission attached.
2. What Have You Actually Run?
Advice is easy. Ask whether they’ve been responsible for live systems, servers, networks, service desks, when things went wrong at 3am.
3. Do You Understand My Sector?
iGaming, financial services, energy and retail each come with different regulators, risks and expectations. Relevant experience shortens every project.
4. How Do You Handle Security?
A good consultant should raise security without being asked, and explain it in plain English.
5. What Does Success Look Like?
Agree measurable outcomes up front: cost saved, downtime reduced, audit passed.
6. How Will You Hand Over?
Documentation and knowledge transfer should be part of every engagement, so you’re never dependent on one person.
7. What Will It Cost, Really?
Ask for a written quote with a clear scope. Fixed fees for projects and predictable retainers for ongoing work are a good sign.
