On 25 September 2026, Brazil’s President signed a provisional measure prohibiting fixed odds betting and online casino gaming, less than three years after the country’s regulated framework was established. As reported by NEXT.io, licensed operators must stop accepting new customer funds, players have a short window to withdraw their balances, and websites and apps are expected to go offline in early October. The measure still requires approval by Congress to remain in force permanently.
Whatever happens politically, the lesson for every operator is the same: a market exit can arrive with days of notice rather than months. The technical work involved is significant, and it is far easier with a plan prepared in advance.
1. Stop New Business on the Required Date
- Disable registrations and deposits for the affected market at a precise, agreed time
- Remove the market from marketing tools, affiliate campaigns and CRM journeys
- Confirm that promotional and bonus engines no longer target affected players
2. Handle Player Funds Correctly
- Prioritise withdrawal processing and add support capacity
- Reconcile every balance between the platform, PSPs and banking partners
- Agree with payment partners how remaining balances will be returned
3. Enforce Access Restrictions
- Apply geoblocking at the edge and at application level
- Test from the affected market using reliable location checks
- Display a clear, compliant notice to players who attempt to access the site
4. Preserve Data and Evidence
- Retain transaction, KYC and account records for the required periods
- Keep a timeline of every action taken, for regulators and auditors
- Review data protection obligations before deleting or transferring data
5. Notify and Decommission
- Inform game providers, aggregators, PSPs and affiliates of the exit date
- Revoke integrations and credentials that are no longer required
- Decommission market specific infrastructure in a controlled way
